It actually lived up to the hype. Both of my parents, people I work with, even people my age, say it’s the scariest movie ever made. While I might not agree, I do agree that it’s one, if not, the best well crafted horror movie ever made. Having seen countless exorcism movies before this one, I was read for it to not be as good as people made it out to be. I was so wrong, the way it’s crafted to create this moment of pure evil, right from the beginning, then taken throughout the film with its unsettling imagery and vicious language, it manages to terrify even the most unfaithful of people. Hate love story 3. The acting all around still holds up. Whatever the case may be of how much Linda Blair played possessed Reagan, I thought she gave a terrifying performence, while still maintaining an electric over the top quality, that felt powerful yet down to earth and believable.

The effects do look slightly dated, but I think it adds to the unsettling atmosphere, creating a more, beyond life, truly demonic look. Overall I thought it was truly a work of art, and deserves its title of best horror film ever. I think a lot of what makes The Exorcist so effective, and what other demonic possession movies get wrong, is that it grounds itself in a thoroughly believable portrayal of modern day Catholicism and Catholic theology. In other movies the exorcist character always feels as though they've stepped straight out of the middle ages as they go about reciting hokey lines about eternal damnation and whatever. But The Exorcist is dripping in the existential malaise and listlessness that came to characterize the culture of the modern Church, and it uses this spiritual crisis as the engine room for much of its horror. In a lot of ways the reason Karras has such a problem believing in the demon is because he doesn't even believe in God anymore, something he has in common with many latter day clergymen (or at least that's my experience being raised and educated in the Catholic system, lol).
