Katrina Kaif is beautiful, can dance well but can’t emote and Anushka Sharma gets better with every film although she does need to try something different from the bubbly girl roles. The cinematography is delicious and the songs are fairly decent too and should do well outside the context of the film.
Neither can carry the picture into classic Yash Chopra territory, however. Instead of spending three hours in a theatre seeking nostalgia just rent his old masterpieces on DVD and have a fun night at home. Even as his die hard fans might throng to the theatres. Yash Chopra may not be with us any more, but his legacy is still alive through his films & music. Jab Tak Hai Jaan's music is melodious & soothing to ears. A.R Rahman has composed the music for this upcoming SRK-Kat flick directed by the late Yash Chopra.
Music has always been a key component of YRF (Yash Raj films). And JTHJ is no exception. The soundtrack also brought together A.R Rahman, Gulzaar & Yash Chopra for the very first time. The album comprises of nine tracks in total.
' Challa' is an awesome composition made up of Punjabi verses & sung passionately by Rabbi. It's interesting to note that the song got more than a million hits on the opening day when the video promo was released last month. 'Saans' is a melodious slow romantic track sung by Shreya & Mohit.
The feel of the song is really sensuous, especially the lines rendered by Shreya. Mohit has tried to sing in a nasal tone like Mukesh, which does not suit SRK. I feel that Abhijeet, who emerged as the voice of SRK, would have been a better bet compared to Mohit. 'Ishq Shaava' is the most peppy dance number. The picturisation is equally beautiful especially Kat's dancing & her chemistry with SRK on the dance floor. Raghav Sachar & Shilpa Rao impress with their vocal prowess against a backdrop of Arabic beats.
'Heer' by Harshdeep kaur is a nice Punjabi Sufi track. 'Jiye Re' by the debutante Neeti Mohan is simply awesome. Her voice sounds really refreshing & suits Anushka. Title track 'JTH J' rendered by Jaaved Ali & newcomer Shaktisree is my pick of the album.
A beautiful romantic track which I'm sure will rule the music charts. 'Saans-Reprise version & Ishq Dance- instrumental are also good. 'Jab Tak hai Jaan' poem written by Aditya Chopra & sung by SRK is average.
It seems that SRK has tried too hard to emulate Amitabh's style. The poetry is quite similar to Amitabh's 'Main Aur Meri Tanhai' from the the very popular 'Silsila'. But Amitabh's rendition was way better. In a nutshell, the musical score of 'JTHJ' is melodious, gripping & provides lot of variety. There is poetry, slow romantic tracks & fast peppy dance tracks.
The album resonates not only with a lot of Rahman influence especially the use of stringed instruments like guitars, violins & cellos etc., but it also gives a glimpse of the old, soulful Yash Raj music magic. Gulzaar Saab has once again weaved his magic with the lyrics. Javed Ali & Raghav Sachar impress. One hopes to hear more of their songs in the coming months.
JTHJ is all set to release on 13th November, 2012 on the auspicious occasion of Diwali. One hopes that the movie does well at the box office. That will be the best tribute to the maestro Yash Chopra. Rating: 4.5/5 Musical Contribution Perdy Mohindru.
